Continental Philosophy from Hegel

چکیده
Historians of philosophy writing in English typically construct their narratives as if the authors whom they are discussing were all taking part in a single argument -an argument that is conducted in terms of those problems that we now recognize to be relevant. This appears to leave no place for those who do not share our current assumptions regarding the nature of the issues — who lie outside what we think of as "our tradition". Yet what is the alternative? Unless we can situate the authors whom we study in relation to our own concerns what philosophical value (rather than value of a historical, biographical or sociological kind) is there in engaging with them? Fortunately, this apparent dilemma rests on a misunderstanding. Philosophy is not a discipline carried on according to rules and assumptions fixed once and for all. On the contrary, it has always involved an attempt to examine and call into question ideas and commitments that are otherwise taken for granted. Thus we do not need to share assumptions with the authors whom we study (or, worse, pretend that we share them, when we do not) in order to include them in our discussion. Indeed, it may be the very fact that authors proceed from an underlying position very different from our own that makes studying them valuable: the difference challenges us to reflect on commitments that we would otherwise not even realize that we had. The problem is to explain the distinctiveness of the authors' own concerns in sufficient detail to make them intelligible and to find enough common ground to make the challenge that they represent a productive one. That is the purpose of this chapter.

E Differential Point of View of the Infinitesimal Calculus in Spinoza, Leibniz Anddeleuze
In Hegel au Spinosa:' Pierre Macherey challenges the influence of Hegel's reading of Spinoza by stressing the degree to which Spinoza eludes the grasp of the Hegelian dialectical progression of the history of philosophy. He argues that Hegel provides a defensive misreading of Spinoza, and that he had to "misread him" in order to maintain his subjective idealism. The suggestion being that Spinoz...

This article charts the history of the concept of system in order to establish a set of conceptual trends in the philosophy of systems. Hegel's view of poetry clarifies the overall role of language in his system and allows him to makes sense of a difficult linguistic issue: how to distinguish between poetry and prose. For Hegel, this distinction is crucial because it illuminates the different ways poetry and prose allow us to understand ourselves as members of an ethical community. In this paper, I argue, using Hegel, that the ...

The dissolution of the Western-dominated Postwar Order, and the Eurocentric myths that sustain it, presents a unique opportunity to ponder an old question posed by every new generation: How can philosophy, which Islamic and ancient Greek learning traditions have long defined as the pursuit of “wisdom,” resume its millennial civilizing role? This paper looks beyond passing political events to re...

It is now evident that the so-called Hegeljahre of 1970 — the 200th anniversary of Hegel's birth — was only the start of a decade of Hegel. This review can make no claim to be comprehensive. I...
